Betty (Skidds) Chamberlain, 78, passed away peacefully June 11, 2018. Betty and her high school sweetheart, Bob, were married for 52 years before he passed in 2010. Betty was born in Calais, Maine. Her family moved to Old Orchard Beach when she was a toddler. In the 70’s she worked as a bookkeeper in St. Margaret’s Parish Credit Union. Betty was a faithful communicant of St. Margaret’s Church, serving as a Eucharistic minister as well as a lector for many years. Later she worked for 30 years as a baker for the Old Orchard Beach school district. Betty adored the beach, rain or shine. Her grandchildren grew up enjoying ‘Nana’s beach’ in Ocean Park. Mom was known for her caring and giving heart – and her whoopie pies!
She is survived by her children, Stephanie Chamberlain formerly of Westbrook, Craig Chamberlain and his wife, Doris, of Saco, Jamie Chamberlain of Old Orchard Beach, and Sarah (Chamberlain) Beaulieu and her husband Joe of Eddington. Her grandchildren gave her many special joyful memories; Lewis R. Emery and his wife Irene of California, Brent Emery and his wife Caitlin Dockweiller of California, Alex Emery and his wife Brittany of Virginia, Glenn Emery of California, Riley Chamberlain of Florida, Colby Chamberlain of Saco, and Grace Beaulieu of Eddington. Additionally Betty had four great grandchildren, Lewis Emery and Vivienne Emery, also Scott Emery and Todd Emery, as well as many, many special people in her life.
Mom’s journey included a long fight with dementia. However, she never let the disease dampen her spirit. Betty always had a smile and a hug for everyone she encountered. Many people along this journey were part of ‘Team Betty’, from her dear friends and family to intensely caring and compassionate professionals. Our family thankfully acknowledges Dr. Hal Cohen and his staff, the staff at Saco & Biddeford Savings Institute in Old Orchard Beach, VNA Lifestages staff, the VNA Hospice team and everyone at Avita of Stroudwater Memory Care Center. Avita’s 24/7 dedication to mom when she joined their community was reassuring and heartwarming. We are so very grateful.
Friends and family are invited to visiting hours Thursday June 21, 2018 from 4pm-7pm at the Old Orchard Beach Funeral Home, 36 Portland Ave., Old Orchard Beach. A Memorial Mass will be held Friday June 22 at 11am at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Old Orchard Beach, 6 Saco Ave. (formerly known as St. Margaret’s Church.)
