Obituary

Dr. Harold "Hal" Neuberger of Raymond, Maine, passed away peacefully on August 1,2016. Born June 1,1929 in Frankfurt, Germany, Hal and his parents moved to the United States when Hal was nine and he spent his youth in New York. As a young man. he joined the US Marine Corps, serving overseas. After

years of distinguished military service, Captain Neuberger pursued his real love -- academia. Hal earned a B.S. at Iowa Wesleyan College, an M.S. at the University of New Mexico, and a Doctor of Education at Boston University. He served as a professor of science education at the University of Southern Maine for 34 years, sharing his knowledge and love of learning with generations of teachers.

Early in his professorship, Hal was recruited by the National Science Foundation to work on the Science Curriculum Improvement Study (SCIS) at Cal Berkeley. His team developed innovative curricula designed to engage students in hands-on science learning. The curricula changed the face ofscience education culminating in Hal co-authoring the Houghton Mifflin published science program used nation- wide for classrooms from kindergarten through eighth grade. Hal retired as professor emeritus in l99l .

Hal was a voracious reader and had a deep appreciation for diverse cultures, art. and classical music. ln his free time, he enjoyed traveling the world with his wife of 56 years. Charlotte. From river cruises through France to bus trips across Russia. Hal and Charlotte were consummate explorers. traveling to England, Austria, Cyprus, Tunisia, Turkey, Anguilla and Mexico. He enjoyed soaking up the sun while sailing in the Caribbean, religiously reading the New York Times every day. cooking the perfect egg, mixing a painfully dry martini, and relaxing while overlooking his beloved Sebago Lake.

Hal made the most of every day and was fiercely proud of his family. He is survived by his loving wife Charlotte, son Thomas Neuberger of Alexandria VA. daughter Heidi Lynn of Jacksonville FL. and grandchildren Dr. Lindsay Neuberger of Orlando FL, Dr. Daniel Neuberger of Huntsville AL. Austin Neuberger of Tuscaloosa AL, David Neuberger of Norfolk VA. and Christopher Lynn of Tuscaloosa AL, aswellaubergerfamilywillcelebrateHalduringaprivate
