Robert Smith Obituary

Saco (formerly of Old Orchard Beach) – Robert B. Smith 88, passed away December 7, 2019 at the Inn at Atlantic Heights in Saco.

He was born in Biddeford on November 8, 1931, the son of Edwin and Nan Hartrey Smith.  He graduated from Old Orchard Beach High School and Bridgton Academy then attended Bates College.  He served 3 years in the Army National Guard of Maine.  Bob was a pharmaceutical sales representative for over 40 years, winning numerous sales awards.  He also spent many summers operating the former Old Orchard House Hotel.

Bob was an enthusiastic sports fan, cheering especially hard for the Boston Red Sox and the Dallas Cowboys. From 1949-1951 Bob competed as an amateur boxer in Lewiston. He loved traveling with his wife of 60 years to the Southwest and the Caribbean. Bob was a voracious reader of history and fiction; he always had a book in hand. He was a communicant of St Margaret’s Church – Good Shepherd Parish.

He was predeceased by his wife Margaret, his parents, a brother Edward Smith and a daughter Lynda Smith.

He is survived by his daughter Deborah and her husband Michael Mercurio of Marblehead, MA, his son Christopher Smith of Marblehead, MA and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be held on Friday, December 20, 2019 at 11:00am at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Old Orchard Beach.  Burial will follow at the  family plot at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Biddeford.

Arrangements are in the care of Old Orchard Beach Funeral Home.
