OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine--Robert J. Couri, 91, of Old Orchard Beach died, Thursday, May 16, 2019, in Southern Maine Health Care Center in Biddeford.
He was born in Portland, January 18, 1928, a son of Jacob and Marie (Abushard) Couri. The family moved here from Portland when he was a child and had been a resident of Old Orchard Beach until his death. He received his formal education in the Old Orchard Beach School System, graduating from Old Orchard Beach High School in 1947. He later attended Communication School in Boston.
His wife, Ellen Lombard, died February 3, 2015.
Bob retired several years ago as a Supervisor of Communications at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery following several years of service.
During his high school years, Bob served as a Life Guard. For many years he served as a Movie projector during the summers in Old Orchard Beach movie theaters.
Some of Bob’s passions were his years of piano playing, radio broadcasting (W1YMD) and his love of photography. He never left home without his camera. He was an instrumental source in the research and knowledge of the town’s history. Bob was an avid student of computer technology and active in Social Media.
He was a member of the “Over the Hill Gang” who met daily for coffee at the former Zahares IGA Super Market on Heath Street. He also enjoyed his Tuesday luncheons with his friends, especially the late Jerome LePelletier, as well as Earold Bennett and Ray Copp. Special thanks from the family to Earold and Ray for always being there for their outings to various community dinners and suppers throughout York County.
His love for his nieces Kathy and Becky was unconditional until the end. Bob will always be remembered for his wit by many of his acquaintances…”Good Show.. Hi Ho… Alive and Breathing.”
Besides his wife he was predeceased by his parents, a son David M. Couri; a sister, Lillian C. and her husband John E. Marshall.
Survivors include a daughter, Lynda C. Wood and her husband, Richard “Woody”, Escondido California; daughter- in- law, Regina Sullivan Fontaine. ; a grandson, Adam Wood, of Whitefish, Montana; nieces, Kathy Marshall, Old Orchard Beach; Becky Bogdanovich, Scarborough; Eileen Lombard, Kelly M. Leblond, Sherry Lombard; nephews, Kevin Lombard, of Blaftor, South Carolina; Patrick Lombard; and several great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 4-7 PM, with Funeral Liturgy at 6:00 PM, Wednesday, May 22, 2019, at the OLD ORCHARD BEACH FUNERAL HOME, 36 Portland Avenue, Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
